The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland links the country highlights along one spectacular route, travelling from traditional mountain villages to buzzing cities, on this eight day journey covering the popular scenic trains, including two well-known mountain top excursions, Jungfraujoch and Mount Pilatus. This tour features the most popular Swiss scenic trains including the Golden Pass, Glacier Express, Bernina and Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.
The basic package includes:
- A Swiss Card with eight transfers in Second Class
- Seven nights three star hotel accommodation in a double room sharing, including breakfast
Passengers will not be accompanied on this tour. Seat reservations are compulsory on all scenic trains, at an additional cost.
This tour is valid for travel between mid- May to mid- October.
Itineraries can be extended, booked in the reverse direction, and upgrades are possible.
Day 1: Travel from any Swiss Airport or border town to Zurich
Day 2: Zurich – Lucerne – Interlaken
Take a short trip from Zurich to Lucerne. Once in Lucerne, enjoy town squares, churches and steamships on Lake Lucerne. Not to be missed, an excursion to Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to one of the longest shopping promenades in Europe. Then take the beautiful Golden Pass Line over the Brunig Pass to Interlaken.
Day 3: Interlaken – Jungfraujoch – Montreux
A visit to the world famous Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, a snow and ice wonderland accessed through the highest altitude railway station in Europe, and when returning back into Interlaken, continue through the scenic Simme Valley to Montreux on Lake Geneva.
Day 4: Montreux – Martigny – Zermatt
From Lake Geneva, you’ll travel to Martigny, the gateway to Great St Bernard and Forclaz Pass. Continue on via Brigg to Zermatt.
Day 5: Zermatt – St Mortiz
This legendary stretch includes a ride on the Glacier Express from the Matterhorn village to Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city. Before arriving in St Moritz, consider a trip from Chur to Davos. Its hundreds of serpentine turns and mountain tunnels at 3-6 000 feet are a photographers dream.
Day 6: St Moritz – Lugano
Two routes lead to Lugano in Switzerland’s sunny South. In summer, choose the Bernina Express train to Tirano (Italy), then bus to Lugano. In winter, travel by Palm Express PostBus over passes and through valleys. Don’t miss a 1,5 hour excursion on the Centovalli Express from Locarno to Domodossola, Italy a spectacularly stunning route that includes 83 bridges and 31 tunnels.
Day 7: Lugano – Lucerne
Few things will take your breath away like the Wilhelm Tell Express. Combining rail and waterway travel, this five hour trip starts with scenic rail before connecting to a spectacular 2,5 hour Lake Lucerne steamer boat ride.
Day 8: Travel from Lucerne to any Swiss Airport or border town.
