Bullet Trains called “Shinkansen” in Japanese are known for travelling at speeds of up to 300 km/h (184 miles per hour) in quiet comfort.
The validity of the Japan Rail Pass is seven days, 14 days and 21 days in both Green and Ordinary Classes.
|Railways||Includes all JR Group Railways-Shinkansen “bullet trains” (except any reserved or non-reserved seat on “NOZOMI” trains), limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains. (With some exceptions). The Japan Rail Pass can be used for the Tokyo motorail and on the Aoimori Railway Line between Aomori and Hachinohe. The Japan Rail Pass can be used in the following cases: the case where the passenger passes through the section between Aomori Station to Hachinohe Station without getting off the train anywhere in that section and; where passengers change to the Ominato Line at Noheji Station. However, passengers using a train with sleeper cars must pay the Aoimori Railway Kine fares and charges.|
|Buses||Local lines of JR bus companies (JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus, JR Kyushu Bus) and some of JR highway bus services (Sapporo-Otaru; Morioka-Hirosaki; Tokyo-Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka,Tsukuba Center; Nagoya-Kyoto, Osaka; Osaka-Tsuyama, Kasai Flower Centre).|
|Ferry||Only the JR Miyajima ferry is covered. The JR Hakata-Pusan (Korea) ferry is not covered.|
When the Japan Rail Pass is used on JR trains that run through non-JR lines, fares and charges for the sections travelled must be paid to the private railway company concerned. Payment of these charges is made either on the train or at a station on said company’s line.

With a Green-Type Japan Rail Pass, travellers can use either class, while with an Ordinary-Type Japan Rail Pass they can only use Ordinary Cars without paying an additional charge. Refer to the table below for details.
- The cars with ✔ can be used with a Japan Rail pass
- The use of cars with X requires paying additional charges
- XX if travellers use a “DX Green” or relat TSUBAME train (operated by J.R Kyushu) they must pay the limited express charge in addition to the DX Green charge
- There are no Green cars on most “HIKARI” and “KODAMA” trains on the Sanyo Shikansen line(Shin-Osaka-Hakata) or on series 800 trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen line.
- When using the GranClass car for both Green Car and Ordinary Cars only the basic fare is covered with the Japan Rail Pass and an additional payment will be required for the limited express charge and the GranClass car surcharge
- The Japan Rail pass is not valid for any seats reserved (including Green Car) or non reserved on “NOZOMI” and “MUZIHO” trains
